When you're in the food business, food is on your mind (and palate!) all the time. Heed these useful bits of advice from some of the who's who in the local culinary scene on how to cook smarter, eat better, and stay fit while you're at it.

1. MAKE VEGGIE SANDWICH FILLINGS.
"At the start of the week, I grill slices of zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, and mushrooms, then assemble them in a sandwich with mozarella and homemade pesto whenever I need a snack or a light meal. In the fridge, they last a little over a week." - Mylene Chung, director of photography and founder of Pepper.ph

2. HAVE A HEARTY BREAKFAST.
"My typical good-girl breakfast include 6 oz. of a fruit and vegetable smoothie, a cup of black coffee, and a bowl of oatmeal with a dollop of condensada plus 1-2 tablespoons peanut or almond butter for protein." -Lori Baltazar, food writer and blogger, Dessert Comes First

3. MAKE FUN PARTY FOOD.
"I focus on proteins (meat, seafood) with interesting sauces, fresh herbs and a wide selection of intricately prepared vegetables." - Erwan Heussaff, food and drink editor of Esquire Philippines and blogger at The Fat Kid Inside

4. GET CALCIUM FROM A VARIETY OF FOODS.
"Not just from milk and dairy, but also from plants like Chinese broccoli and pechay, and from tofu, white beans, and molasses. These foods also contain bone-health-friendly nutrients like vitamin C, K, and potassium." - Marie Gonzalez, owner and chef of Kitchen Revolution

5. CALL IN A SUBSTITUTE.
"Add healthful substitutes. For example, when I prepare salpicao, I use 50 percent meat and 50 percent shiitake mushrooms or tofu." - Sandralyn Hataway, chef
