Throughout the ages, yoga—the Sanskrit word for “union”— has been known to promote the oneness of mind, body, and spirit. While yoga may not be as fast-paced or cardio-driven as other activities (such as basketball, swimming, running, and the like), it has become increasingly popular, especially among women. Why? Most practitioners would cite the mental and spiritual peace it offers, and the way it trims and tones one’s figure over time.

There are different kinds of yoga, ranging from the milder hatha yoga—which involves slow-paced stretching, seated meditation, and basic breathing exercises—to the more intensive Bikram and power yoga. Novel variations in the trend also include the Barre3 Workout, which is a fusion of yoga, Pilates, and ballet.

Regardless of what kind of yoga you may want to consider trying, there are a lot of benefits that can be derived from its daily practice. Check out the slide show below to learn about just a few of them.
