article_wearing-makeup-gym.jpgWe'll nip this right in the bud by saying it up front. No, you should not wear makeup at the gym. There are few enough instances where you can skip cosmetics and let your skin breathe, and workout sessions should definitely be one of them.

Heading out and facing a group of strangers with nary a stitch of makeup in your face may sound daunting; but trust us, you're stressing about it more than you should. Those people aren't thinking of that miniscule spot on your cheek or your unglossed lips! They have a lot on their plate as it is. Notice how self-absorbed you get at the gym? Yup, that applies to every single person in the room. But we digress.

Hitting the gym is, first and foremost, about getting your fitness fix—and not about meeting cute guys (regardless of what your favorite magazine may tell you). You are there to tone that body, to burn those calories, and to work toward a certain goal.

Still not convinced? What if we tell you that wearing makeup while logging in time at the stationary bike is a surefire way to break out? All that strenuous activity leads to a lot of sweating. How does sweating occur? Through your pores opening up. Now, imagine your carefully applied foundation seeping into those aforementioned pores. But wait, it gets worse.

According to Dr. Ava Shamban, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA, "Combined with oil and perspiration, [makeup] creates a pore-plugging sludge that can result in blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, ashiness, and allergies. On the eyelids, unwashed mascaras, shadows and highlighters can plug the pores, creating little cysts called milia. And if you're working hard, eye makeup can melt into your eyes."

We never did like the sound of "pore-plugging sludge." So the next time we're doing anything fitness-related—be it a hot yoga class, a nighttime run, or a one-on-one tennis match—we're skipping the makeup. Looking cute at the gym just isn't worth all those skin care problems. In the words of the charming Bruno Mars: "You're amazing just the way you are." Yes, sweaty shirt, messy hair, and all.
