Kids these days enjoy a great array of food choices, but unfortunately, most of them, choose to eat unhealthy food. And it doesn't just stop with junk food and trans fats. reports that the more and more children seem to be drinking sugar-sweetened drinks (SSBs) such as sodas and artificially-sweetened juices.


Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill evaluated data from 10,955 children between ages 2 to 18, separating them into three age groups: 2-5, 6-11, and 12-18. Results showed that SSBs were responsible for the younger kids' higher caloric intake. For kids ages 12-18, however, the case was a bit different. Results showed that both food and SSBs were responsible for the increased calorie intake of those who consumed more than 500 kcal of SSBs.

Lead investigator Kevin Mathias concludes, "Among all age groups analyzed, the energy density (calories per gram) of food consumed increased with higher SSB intake. This is concerning because many foods that are associated with higher SSB consumption (e.g., pizza, cakes/cookies/pies, fried potatoes, and sweets) are also top sources of solid fats and added sugars..."

These findings only stress the importance of training children to eat right. It may be hard to serve kids good food at first, but with the right recipe, your kids will quickly grow to love eating healthy!
