According to a new study featured on Science Daily, daily physical activities like gardening may improve the cardiovascular health of older adults.
Researchers interviewed almost 4,000 senior citizens about their lifestyle and habits and monitored their heart conditions for 12.5 years.
They found that participants who did gardening and other DIY activities lowered their risk of heart attack or stroke by 27 percent and their risk of death from all causes by 30 percent regardless of the amount of formal exercise they had.
Researchers believe that muscle contraction and energy expenditure may have something to do with the benefit. Apparently, standing up and moving about increases our metabolic rate and keeps the skeletal muscle’s hormone production normal. That’s why it’s important for older adults to remain active in order to protect them from heart and other metabolic conditions.
