All our actions have consequences. Partying all night, drinking lots of alcohol, and sleeping with makeup still on could all unfortunately lead to age acceleration. The good news is, we can do something about it. Just as these bad habits can make us feel 10 years older with a hangover, so can good habits make us feel revitalized.

And while it may take us approximately 21 days to change our old ways, committing to it will be worth it when we realize just how young we look and feel compared with other people our age.

1. Perfect your skincare ritual.

“Genes that you inherit from your parents do play a huge part in how your skin looks and how it ages,” says Bobbi Brown in her book Beauty Rules. However, your DNA is not a “life sentence” nor is it something you can take for granted.

Remember to put on sunblock before you leave the house. Remove all traces of makeup before you go to sleep. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize—doing all these regularly will keep your skin looking young and beautiful.

2. Exercise regularly.

A lot of people have been talking about the Insanity workout as of late, but you don’t really have to go through such lengths just to keep aging at bay. Start by following some of these easy exercises routines at home or go to the gym. Either way, giving your body a daily dose of active movement is good for you.

In fact, one study reported by the New York Times found that middle-aged men who were longtime runners had healthier and younger cells than their sedentary peers. Another study says that those who exercise regularly have longer telomeres, a biological marker for aging, according to Prevention.com.

3. Drink lots of water.

Want to stay as young as you can? Trade your usual cup of joe for a glass of water instead. Self.com says that it’s a great way to keep your body hydrated, and it gives your skin that gorgeous glow other women would kill for.

To shake things up, add fresh slices of lemon to your water or give the increasingly popular coconut water a try. According to Live Strong, it’s loaded with antioxidants and electrolytes, making it the perfect stress buster.
