This just in: results of a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey show that seven out of ten Filipinos support the distribution of condoms to curb the spreading of sexually-transmitted diseases, the Philippine Star reports. Statistically speaking, 72 percent of the sampled population approve of the Department of Health’s promotion of condoms and their proper use in the country as a means to prevent the transmission of HIV and AIDS.After a nationwide assessment from April 16 to 19, survey results show an 80 percent approval from the National Capital Region (NCR) and 75 percent from the rest of Luzon, a 64 percent approval from Visayas, and a 70 percent approval from Mindanao. The dissemination and correct usage of condoms was endorsed more in urban areas (75 percent) than in rural ones (64 percent).
If you will recall, last Valentine’s Day, Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral distributed condoms to the public in an attempt to raise awareness about sexually-transmitted diseases—an act that brought her violent criticism from the Catholic Church. Still, Secretary Cabral stood her ground, and now it seems that most of the country is on the same page.
