When a man and a woman go their separate ways, the ones that are most affected are their children. There are many ways that kids cope with such a situation, but oftentimes when acceptance and understanding don’t come easy, they tend to walk a more destructive path, using vices as means of escape.

In recent study featured on ScienceDaily.com, researchers from the University of Toronto found a possible link between parental divorce and smoking. Based on data from 7,850 men and 11,506 women 18 years old and above, they found that before reaching 18, a total of 1,551 sons and 2,382 daughters saw their parents get divorced, while 4,316 men and 5,072 women admitted to smoking at least 100 sticks in their lives.

Although a total connection between parental divorce and smoking has yet to be proven, researchers say that men who saw their families broken before the age of 18 had a 48 percent increased chance of smoking more than 100 sticks in their lives as compared to those whose families were intact. On the other hand, women had a 39 percent increased chance of the same.

Although divorce is currently not legal in the Philippines, many couples go through separation and annulment for various reasons, leaving children to feel the brunt of the situation. It's important for parents to explain the reasons why it happened without placing the blame on anyone. Showing that they are both still present in their children’s lives can ease possible feelings of anger and abandonment. Most of all, no matter what quarrel a couple has with each other, it is a must to remain civil, especially in front of the kids. Parents may lose their love for each other, but they should never lose their love for their children.
