Let’s admit it-when we’re stressed, the first thing we want to do is eat–whether that’s chocolate, ice cream, or cake, we go to food to relieve us from all the stress we’re feeling.
Registered dietician Rebecca Scritchfield explains that when we’re stressed, it can trigger a sugar craving and we release different kinds of hormones. “We have a high level of a hormone called cortisol, and we crave sugar because if we eat some sugar, we will actually get another hormone called serotonin, which is calming and relaxing. It’s just our body’s way of taking a chill pill.”
She also explains that the reason we tend to eat more sugary foods when we’re tense is because sugar “lights up the pleasure and reward center of our brain,” making us want more of it.
