Getting more sleep means more than getting enough rest. According to a study featured on ScienceDaily.com, it may also mean having a lower obesity risk.

Researchers from the University of Chicago Medicine and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee observed nine participants with an average age of 23 years old in a sleep lab for six nights in two sessions at least one month apart.

In random order, the participants were asked to sleep for 8.5 hours and 4.5 hours. Their diets were also monitored based on their weight and height.

The results revealed that those who were sleep deprived had higher levels of 2-arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AG, an endocannabinoid molecule that is associated with the pleasures of eating.

High 2-AG levels may prompt the body to consume more food than it should, but getting enough sleep may manage 2-AG levels, lowering the possibility of getting the munchies.

Researchers believe that these findings can go a long way in helping people lower their risk of obesity. So if you want to lower your own risk, try to get eight hours of sleep every night You'll be more functional in the morning when you do and less likely to indulge in that second cup of rice.
