According to a study featured on Science Daily, pollutants that can be found in the food that you eat may cancel out the health benefits of regular exercise and proper diet.
Researchers from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research worked with two groups of mice to see how such compounds could affect the body. Although both groups were given a high-fat, high-sucrose diet, one of them had meals with minute traces of chemicals to represent pollutants that are often found in human food.
Researchers found that there were no signs of poisoning and excessive weight gain in the group with the trace chemicals. However, there was lower glucose tolerance in females which meant problems with insulin signaling. Pollutants in the food also seemed to cause less estrogen activity by strengthening a liver enzyme that eliminates the hormone. On the other hand, the male mice showed imbalances in cholesterol transport, which could lead to metabolic diseases.
This shows that pollutants, even in small doses, may greatly affect our health. Protect yourself as much as you can by exercising and eating right. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements may also help you improve your immune system. Lastly, a stress-free trip out of town where the air and water are cleaner may help your body relax and recuperate.
You may not be able much against contaminants in your food, but you can do a lot about improving your lifestyle.
