working_men__exercise_inside.jpgA recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine says that men who work at either an active or sedentary job get more physical activity than working women.

TIME.com reports that the study was conducted among 1,800 working-aged adults who answered an in-depth survey asking them questions about their lifestyle and work habits. To get even more information, the survey participants agreed to wear an accelerometer, a device used to measure physical activity, over several days.

The results of the study showed that men who worked--whether at a desk job or doing more manual labor--got more exercise overall than men who were not working. However, the opposite was true for women. According to TIME.com, "women in sedentary jobs did less physical activity on weekdays than their healthy non-working peers." It is interesting to note, however, that healthy non-working males got the least amount of exercise from all the respondents who participated in the study.

Unfortunately, the research did not have information to draw conclusions on why this is so, but they do write that there is cause to suggest that "healthy non-working women are replacing work with active pursuits where as--for some reason--non-working men generally are not.
