Having a mobile phone might be convenient, but a new study featured on TIME reveals that the perpetual connectivity it offers may hurt you more than help you.

Researchers from Kent State University surveyed 500 college students about their mobile phone usage, their level of anxiety and satisfaction, and their academic performance.

After one year, the research team found that those who used their cell phones the most were more likely to experience increased anxiety and have lower grade point average scores.

Researchers speculate that these negative effects are brought about by stress. Some students may have trouble disconnecting, and they may also feel obliged to keep in touch with their friends. This created a cycle of discontent, which could affect other activities, such as their studies.

To avoid this, try switching your phone off during the weekend or spend more time with your friends. Having face-to-face contact with other people may be exactly what you need.
