Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines. Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women (even celebrities like Liezl Martinez aren't exempt), says the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, and according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer as quoted on PinayinAction.com, the country has the “highest prevalence of breast cancer in Asia.” Meanwhile, cervical cancer, dubbed the “silent lady killer,” is the second most common cancer among Filipinas with 6,000 diagnosed and 4,349 dying every year.

With startling figures such as these, the likelihood that you have dealt with or are dealing with an incidence of cancer in your family or social circle is big. What steps should you take when one of your loved ones is diagnosed with cancer? Female Network consults Dr. Karen de la Cruz, organizational psychologist and active supporter of the ICanServe movement, a non-profit organization that empowers women with breast cancer, to get a few tips.
