Every year, my plans for turning over a new leaf never really vary. I promise myself to travel to one new place, to sleep better and exercise more, to make time for friends I have neglected in the course of a busy year, and to get around to reading/watching/listening to the books/shows/albums that are perpetually recommended to me, but that I never have time to attend to.
These are my “core” resolutions, and I recycle them year after year—not because I don’t see them through, but because I like to keep going in the right direction.
Having said that, there are certain resolutions of mine which change from year to year: the ones that have to do with the way I dress, what my closet contains, and how I groom myself. Fashion is cyclical, after all—it is governed by seasons, trends, and the consumer’s mercurial, mood-driven tastes. The same goes for beauty: every New Year brings exciting new developments in makeup, skincare, and grooming, and the fun is in the experimenting.
That’s not to say that you should switch your personal taste and eject your grooming regimen for a completely different one every January (although you’re free to do so, if you should choose). What I’m trying to get across, though, is that the New Year presents an opportunity to shake things up, even just a little—and even if your efforts are known only to yourself. Why not take a chance?
Without further ado, here are my fashion and beauty resolutions for 2012: ten changes and challenges that I endeavor to undertake these next 12 months. Wish me luck, FNites!
