Does your child often snore loudly? Don’t brush it off as something that you should take lightly, because MedicalNewsToday.com reports that it could be a sign that something might be wrong.
According to lead study author Dean Beebe, PhD, director of the neuropsychology program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, persistent and loud snoring may be linked to certain behavior problems, such as hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and even depression.
Beebe and his team surveyed mothers of 249 children from ages two to three, asking them questions about their kids’ sleeping habits, as well as their usual conduct around other people. They found that those who snored loudly several times within a given week were rarely breastfed in their younger years and seemed to manifest more conduct issues as compared to those who didn’t.
"That kind of snoring can be a sign of real breathing problems at night that are treatable. I encourage parents to talk to their child's doctor about loud snoring, especially if it happens a lot and persists over time," Dr. Beebe advises.
If your child has reached his preschool years and has already started to snore, it’s best to inform your doctor about it in order to find out the cause and the cure. Although further studies are needed to find the connection between breastfeeding and snoring, this activity has been proven to strengthen the bond between mother and child, making the latter more well-adjusted as he grows older.
