We’re all familiar with this scenario: you’re having a nice evening out with your friends, maybe at a chic restaurant or watering hole. You’re dressed to the nines and feeling like the fab femme you are, when some guy comes up from nowhere and utters the most cringe-worthy opening you’ve ever heard. Something along the lines of, “If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put U and I together.” Or maybe he tries to do a Joey Tribbiani: “How you doin’?” Congratulations, you’ve just fallen victim to a pickup line crime. Granted, some are just so cheesy and hilarious that you can’t help but be charmed by them. After all, it takes a lot of courage for a guy to walk up to a complete stranger—especially one he finds attractive—and start a conversation with something that has the potential to fail big time. But then sometimes, it’s so bad that you’re the one who ends up feeling embarrassed for the dude.
But whether goofy win or epic fail, pickup lines are always great stories to share with your friends—and some of the more phenomenally bad lines become so widely known that even though everyone’s heard of them, no one knows who originally spoke those mortifying words.
