It’s widely known as the Lion City, but during the holiday season, Singapore transforms into Asia’s City of Lights. For about 20 years, both residents and visitors of the island country have witnessed the “light-up” tradition, where Singapore’s Orchard Road and Marina Bay precincts are illuminated by dazzling Christmas decor.

But there’s much more to Singapore than its brilliant boulevards and glamorous skyline (although those are a definite plus). With an ethnically diverse population of close to five million and a historical background that blends races like Malay, Chinese, Indian, Arab, and Anglo-Saxon, Singapore thrives as a cultural (and architectural) melting pot.

This makes it an ideal place to visit if you’re hankering for a holiday sojourn abroad. Luxury travelers can indulge at five-star hotels, slick casinos, and high-end department stores packed with big name designers. On the other hand, budget or family travelers will have a blast at vast open markets, museums, and theme parks like the new Universal Studios Singapore.

But what is most to-die-for in this global nation comes down to the basics: the food. Singapore’s got everything—and we do mean everything—to tickle your taste buds, whether it’s national dishes like satay and beef rendang or the quintessentially English tea and crumpets.

In the following travel diary, Female Network gives you a closer look into Singapore’s sights, sounds, and savorings. We’ll take you through this year’s Light-Up Ceremony and the cityscape it illuminates; show you the best views and to-do’s in town; and tempt you with dishes upon dishes of good eats from a plethora of celebrated kitchens. Read on, and see how Christmas in the tropics is done, Singapore-style!
