If you’ve decided to get fit this month by running, it’s important to know the right running shoes that’ll fit your needs. David McQuade of City Sports tells the The Huffington Post what every would-be runner should understand when it comes to purchasing their first pair.

The space you need inside your shoes
Your feet swell and expand when you run, so make sure that there’s enough space for your feet inside your shoes. Allot a full thumbnail’s worth of space– you don’t want your feet to be so tightly squeezed to the point that there's actual pain.

Your injuries and its effect on your current running experience.
A more comfortable and supportive pair is what you’ll need if you’re on the road to recovery after an accident, but still want to slowly transition back to running. "It's always better to go with a shoe that has a bit more structure and a bit more cushion to it, and slowly work your way into lighter, more flexible styles of shoes," says McQuade.

Your running activities
If you’re planning to join a marathon, then its best to try jogging in your new shoes for a few days before using it in the actual race to help your feet get used to it. You don’t want to get any blisters on the day of the run.

How your new shoes will feel
You won’t be able to run well if you’re not comfortable with your shoes. McQuade says that there’s that one shoe that’s best for each person, "The best shoe is the shoe that is specifically tailored to your foot, support- and cushioning-wise."
