It may be time to start using the stairs on a daily basis, as several studies have noted that it may be the key to staying young.
Taking the stairs can be a huge help in fighting obesity according to a report on NPR.com. “It is a vigorous activity,” says Dr. Karen Lee, a special adviser to the World Health Organization. “It burns more calories per minute than jogging.”
It also keeps your brain healthy, according to a study published in the Neurobiology of Aging journal, it was found that brain age decreases by 0.58 years for every flight of stairs climbed every day.
"People can actively do something to help their brains stay young," says lead researcher Jason Steffener on Concordia.ca. “This is encouraging because it demonstrates that a simple thing like climbing stairs has great potential as an intervention tool to promote brain health.”
Every day when you get to work, opt to take the stairs instead of boarding the elevator. If your office is thirty floors up, get off two floors before your destination and climb the rest of the way. Your body and your brain with thank you for the effort.
