You may want to remind your man to hit the sack early, as Science Daily reports that men who are always sleep deprived may be at risk of losing brain tissue.
Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden asked 15 healthy men to get at least eight hours of sleep one night and deprived them of it on another.
After just one night of poor sleep, they found an increase in the concentrations of NSE (neuron-specific enolase) and S-100B (a kind of protein) in the participants' blood. NSE and S-100B are known markers for neural injury.
“These brain molecules typically rise in blood under conditions of brain damage,” says sleep researcher and study lead author Christian Benedict. “Thus, our results that a lack of sleep may promote neurodegenerative processes.”
The US National Sleep Foundation recommends adults to put in seven to nine hours of rest every night. If you or your man have trouble sleeping, try to avoid drinking coffee seven hours before bedtime. Exercising regularly has also been found to help with insomnia.
