Having a sense of purpose doesn't only keep you going figuratively, but also literally, as a recent feature on the Daily Mail says that waking up every day with a clear direction in life lowers your risk of stroke.
A team of researchers led by Eric Kim from the University of Michigan worked with over 7,000 men and women over 50 years old, many of whom were about to retire or have already retired from their careers. The participants underwent psychological tests, while researchers monitored the number of stroke cases during the study.
They found that those with a sense of purpose lowered their risk of stroke by 73 percent compared with those who have seemingly lost their drive.
Kim explains, "Maintaining a purpose in life not only increases quality of life but may improve physical health and increase longevity."
People who feel that that their lives lack meaning are more prone to stress, depression, and anxiety. This increases cortisol levels, a stress hormone known to trigger inflammation which can lead to stroke.
Believing that you have a purpose and knowing that your life holds meaning are truly important. Keeping positive at whatever age doesn't only benefit you, the good vibes you exude may also affect those who around you.
