The outbreak of the coronavirus has taken the whole world by storm. As of writing, cases have surpassed 200,000 with over 8,000 deaths. But, things may be looking up soon. Japanese scientists are closing in on a flu drug, and a vaccine is already being tested in the U.S. There is still the issue of testing, however.
Coronavirus testing shortages and delays have greatly contributed to the growing number of cases. Since there are only two ways to diagnose the virus (nucleic acid reagents and CT scans), Huawei has developed an AI-assisted diagnosis that helps doctors determine whether patients are infected with an accuracy of over 98 percent.
Huawei worked with Huazhong University of Science & Technology and Lanwon Technology to developed the medical image analysis service that scans CT results. Using AI algorithms and China-based data, the service will save time and reduce doctor's workload.
The medical image analysis technology will also help ease check-up on confirmed cases. According to the release, "For confirmed cases in hospitals, this AI-assist service can perform registration and quantitative analysis on the 4D dynamic data of multiple rechecks within a short period of time, helping doctors effectively evaluate patients' conditions and drug use effects."
Huawei Philippines is already working on getting the service to local hospitals. Once deployed, it should prove to be a great help, especially to government hospitals. The AI-assisted medical image analysis service is currently being offered to designated hospitals for free. Interested hospitals may email Huawei or visit huaweicloud.com.
The tech company hopes to mobilize the technology to upgrade systems for all lung diseases such as pneumonia, lung nodules, and lung cancer in the future.
