Science has long touted the benefits of dark chocolate, especially with regard to cardiovascular health, but did you know that it’s actually a great indulgence and addition to your workout regimen? Aside from giving your body the energy boost it needs during and after intense physical activity, adding a moderate amount of dark chocolate to your diet can actually help you stay healthy. Here are three reasons why:

1. It contains a lot of flavonols.
According to a nutrition and health info-sheet published by the University of California Davis, flavonols are phytochemical compounds “found in plant-based food and beverages” that helps increase the activity of antioxidants in the body. The flavonol Epicatechin is one of the main ingredients of cocoa, which based on on-going studies, can help improve muscle health.   

2. It can help with weight management diets.
A study by the American Chemical Society revealed that cocoa helps inhibit certain digestive enzymes  which can boost the effects of a low-carb diet.

3. It can help keep your spirits up.
Dark chocolate contains anandamide, which according to Hormone.org, is “a neurotransmitter that elevates mood.” When you’re happy, you’re less stressed, and when you’re less stressed, you’re less likely to binge and have an unhealthy diet.
