If you aren't blessed with perfect vision and hate having to wear glasses on a daily basis, you might prefer wearing contact lenses instead of spectacles. But with the alarming prevalence of COVID-19 in the country and all over the world, you'll need to think twice the next time you put on your contacts.

By now, you probably already know the importance of proper hand-washing and avoiding touching your face. In case you needed a reminder, the World Health Organization said that "hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, and mouth," which can cause infection. A report by CNN quotes Dr. Thomas Steinemann of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, who says contact lens users not only touch their eyes more often, they also tend to touch their faces much more than those who don't wear contacts-which is a big no-no when it comes to preventing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you really want to protect yourself from the virus, consider switching to glasses so you won't have to touch your eyes multiple times a day. Plus, glasses act as an extra layer of protection from droplets entering your eyes-though it's much more likely to be infected via mouth or nose than your eyes, according to same report. Either way, it wouldn't hurt to be extra cautious!

So, you might want to give your eyes a rest from contact lenses and break out your favorite frames. In case you want to disinfect your specs for good measure, you'll need lukewarm water, dishwashing liquid, and a lint-free towel. Just run your glasses over lukewarm water, add a drop of dishwashing liquid, and gently rub the lenses until it's completely washed. Then, just wipe dry with a lint-free towel and you're all set!

If you have no choice and you really must put on your contacts, just make sure you practice proper hygiene, make sure you wash your hands before you touch your eyes, and avoid touching your face. Stay safe, Spotters!
