Our health is our responsibility. To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month this October, here are a few facts and figures that all women should keep in mind:

According to Philstar.com, one out of 13 Filipino women may be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. In fact, it is one of the most prevalent cancers in the coiuntry, comprising 16 percent of the 50,000 cancer cases reported. To catch it early on, ask your doctor about getting a mammogram when you hit 40.

In the 2010 report Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates, researchers found that the mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 tumor suppressor genes are present in 5 percent of Filipino breast cancer patients. A couple of months ago, Angelina Jolie underwent a mastectomy because she carried the BRCA1 gene which predisposed her to the disease.
