If you're wondering why your asthma symptoms don't seem to be getting any better, then you may need to sit down and have a nice, long talk with your doctor. According to Science Daily, your problem may lie in how you communicate and follow instructions.

A previous study has already shown that patients who consult with their health specialist make informed choices and feel more empowered. Now, researchers believe that those who feel less inclined to talk to their doctors may be getting in the way of their own recovery.

“When patients do not understand their condition or treatment plan, they may not follow life-saving guidelines, putting them at risk for asthma attacks” says allergist Stanley Fineman of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI).

According to Fineman, only 8 to 13 percent of those diagnosed with asthma continue with their inhaled corticosteroid medications after a year. In another study that involved 34 young adults, researchers found that most stop their medication at the first sign of relief. As asthma needs to be treated continuously, this habit may only trigger the return of symptoms.

“Changes need to be made by allergists and patients to ensure a treatment plan is in place that will be followed. Proper treatment and adherence to the plan not only improves quality of life, but may save lives,” says Fineman.
