Get your trainers on, ladies—it’s time for another fun run! In celebration of International Women’s Day, Senator Pia Cayetano and her Pinay In Action (PIA) Team have organized the PIA Run 2010, the fifth annual running series to benefit indigent women with breast and cervical cancer. To be held on March 13, Saturday, at the SM Mall of Asia Grounds, the PIA Run 2010 is the biggest and only all-women’s running competition in the country, expecting an impressive turnout of 1,000 women for the 4-hour event. There will be 3 distances to choose from: the 10 kilometer individual run, the 5 kilometer individual run, and the 1.6 kilometer team run.
First started in 2005, the PIA Run has sought to raise funds, support, and awareness for impoverished women suffering from cancer. This year, Pinay In Action has partnered with the Carewell Foundation to benefit cervical cancer patients who cannot afford treatment. PIA will be donating P200,000 to the Dr. Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRMMC) for the full radiation treatment of 20 needy cancer patients. Another P100,000 will finance the screening of at least a thousand patients for cervical cancer.
PIA has also tied up with the I Can Serve Foundation, a national support group for women with breast cancer. PIA will donate P100,000 to I Can Serve’s hands-on campaign for breast awareness: this will cover the costs of reproduction of instructional videos and the purchase of DVD players which will be distributed to different barangays all over the Philippines. In addition to this, PIA will match every PHP1,000 donation to I Can Serve by race participants with a monetary contribution from Pinay In Action. That’s what we call charity!
Early registration for the PIA Run 2010 can be accomplished at Maxiworks High Street and Maxiworks Rockwell, or on the Pinay In Action website. However, the early registration period ends on March 7, Sunday—after which only on-site registration on the day of the race itself will be accommodated. Registration on March 13 begins at 5:00 AM, for a fee of PHP450. Join now, and you could literally be running for a life.
