You may have noticed Female Network’s new look , but have you noticed its new sections? Since today is International Women’s Day—a day for celebrating strong women everywhere and their passion, drive, and commitment to making the world a better place—we’d like to focus on our new Womanity section, which brings to the spotlight Filipina women who participate in what the Hebrews called tikkun olam: repairing the world.
Whether the changes they bring about through their toiling, talent, and tenacity benefit their families, community, country, or the world, these women have shown that passion is the power that fuels change, and that a vision of making things better than they are is sometimes all you need to get people to sit up and pay attention.
But paragons as these women may be, at the end of the day, they’re all still human, and they have to fight the battles everyone fights—managing their lives, struggling to maintain work-life balance, defining themselves in their own right and not just in terms of the people they surround themselves with... sound familiar? It should.
But is this section just for women? Certainly not! This is why it’s called Womanity—because these women’s struggles are the struggles of humanity, color them in shades of purple and pink though we may. They are inspiring Filipina women—but you don’t have to be Filipino or a woman to appreciate their stories.
Our stories include those of Charmaine Clamor, a US-based jazz vocalist; Stephanie Reese, who was the first Filipina vocalist to do a solo performance at Carnegie Hall; Maya Calica, a writer and editor; Rosalind Wee, entrepreneur turned social advocate; Janet Belarmino, who was one of the first Filipinas to reach the summit of Mount Everest; and so many more.
In the future, you can expect Womanity features on even more amazing women, including Daphne Oseña-Paez, the recently appointed UNICEF Special Advocate for Children, and Dr. Jurgenne Primavera, the environmental conservationist who was named one of the 2008 Time Magazine Heroes of the Environment.
