The Department of Education announced earlier this week that the Philippines will be implementing the K+12 basic education program starting school year 2012-2013, The Philippine Star reports. According to a briefer posted on Gov.ph, the program consists of kindergarten, six years of elementary school, four years of junior high school (grades 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school (grades 11 to 12). This means incoming high school freshmen will be entering Grade 7, the first year of junior high school, next year.
"In 2012, we will begin using the new curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 7. The curriculum is almost complete for these two levels, and we will soon begin preparing our teachers," education secretary Armin Luistro is quoted as saying.
The Philippines currently employs a 10-year basic education system with six years of elementary school and four years of high school. The Philippine Star reports that the country is only one of two in the world that still use this system, the other one being Myanmar.
The Department of Education cites improvements in quality of education and effective preparation for employment, not just entering college, as some of the reasons for adding two years to the curriculum.
