Judging from media reports and the antics of those strongly for or against the Reproductive Health (RH) bill, it's easy to say the issue is controversial. But a recent survey from Pulse Asia shows that 69 percent of Filipinos (about 7 in 10) are in favor of passing the bill.

"Among the 1,200 respondents, 80 percent knew about the RH Bill prior to the survey. Class ABC had the highest level of awareness at 93 percent," reports Spot.PH. GMANews.tv noted that most who opposed the bill were nevertheless in favor of some of its provisions.

But knowing your reasons for wanting the bill passed and knowing that majority of Filipinos are in favor of it is not enough. There is an increasing sense of urgency to this issue, propelled by our country's economic status and rapid population growth. This article on Yahoo! News shares that if our population continues to grow at its current rate, our population is projected to reach 160 million by the year 2050.

Plus, as the article points out, we are facing the possibility of becoming a failed state and suffering even worse economic and environmental conditions than we endure today. Population expert Malcolm Potts is quoted as saying: "Unless the RH bill goes through and unless you are able to offer the poorest economic quintile the choices that they deserve, then people will be poorer. You will be importing food, you will be more like Somalia than Thailand."
