There is no doubt that there are a lot of benefits to cardio exercise. Improved heart function and reduced risk for osteoporosis are just some of the good things we get when we follow a consistent cardio regimen. But pumping up your heart rate isn't just reserved to running on a treadmill or participating in a high-impact aerobic workout at the gym. Sometimes what you need to get your heart rate up is right at home. Climbing the stairs, for example, make for a great way to get your heart pumped.Read on and see how these three tips can add to your stair-climbing workout routine.
1. CHALLENGE YOURSELF.
If you live in a two-story house, go up and down the stairs repetitively. Start for 10 minutes and gradually add 5 minutes each week. If you live in a condominium, initially climb three flights of steps without using the elevator. After a month, try doubling the number of floors.
2. BE CONSISTENT
If you do it only once a week, there will be no gain. Twice a week is just for maintenance. Do this routine at least three times a week minimum to get results. Build up stamina to strengthen the heart and lungs. It takes time for the body to adapt to new exercises so expect some difficulty in the first two weeks. After doing this regularly for a certain period, however, your body will get used to the routine.
3. ADD WEIGHTS
Carrying objects while you climb up stairs adds resistance, but you shouldn't limit yourself to just dumbbells. Carrying your groceries will work just as well.
