A survey conducted by the Social Weather Station (SWS) reveals that 49.7 percent of Filipinos believe life will get better in the next 12 months, an optimistic figure that goes well with our title of second happiest race in Asia. Meanwhile, 23 percent of respondents think their lives will remain the same while a paltry 1.8 percent believe things will get worse. The survey was conducted as part of the TV5-SWS Exit Polls last May10. Still, in a country that has experienced a rough first half of 2010, this hopeful attitude might be considered odd. But with the dawn of a new era at hand, Filipinos are excited to see what’s in store for the Philippines. Will the new president follow through on his platforms and make effective resolutions for the country? We’ll find out soon enough.
It’s not just the new government officials who should be coming up with resolutions, however. Remember the promises you made to yourself at New Year’s? We bet you’re having a hard time making them happen (we are, too!). Trim down those resolutions by going back to the basics with FN’s 5 midyear resolutions for happier times:
GET FIT.
We know it’s hard to stick to a strict diet and exercise regimen but mostly, it’s because the idea is intimidating. Just remember that a healthier you is a fun-loving, happier you, and the sooner you make a commitment to getting healthy, the faster you’re going to get there. LEARN TO LET THINGS GO.
In his groundbreaking book Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff—And It’s All Small Stuff, Richard Carlson tells us that we often get worked up over little problems and blow them out of proportion. Reduce stress by not taking things too seriously, learning to delegate, and letting minor irritations slide. Why agitate yourself when you can be happier without all the extra baggage?
TAKE TIME OFF.
Don’t overdo! Make up for all the overtime you do and plan at least one week-long vacation this year. It’ll keep you sane and make you happier. Avoid taking work home, especially on weekends, and always reserve some quiet time for yourself. You don't have to go away; just make sure you get enough “me” time.
BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE.
Self-improvement is a constant process and it’s never too late to start. Upgrade your look (check out FN’s Eco-Chic Fashion series for some eco-friendly DIY suggestions), boost your self-esteem, and revv up your job performance for a fresher, more successful you. Identify your weaknesses and strengths so you can improve on something that hinders your performance or personal relations (such as shyness or temper) as well as play to your best qualities. Even little things like smiling more and being nicer to a frenemy will give you a happy glow. Trust us, everyone will notice the change.
SPREAD THE LOVE AROUND.
Focus on making the people around you happy. Make weekends a special bonding time for you and your family and keep in touch with your friends. Go the extra mile and do more good deeds. Research shows that altruism gives you a “helper’s high,” the same kind of endorphin rush that runners get from the trail, so you won’t just be helping someone feel better about themselves—you’ll be feeling great yourself!
