Stylewise WatchesWhen I was a kid, I used to have this inexplicable aversion to watches. For some strange reason, I made up my mind that they were just for grownups, like my fearsome school principal, my snappish piano teacher, and my infinitely patient math tutor who never quite succeeded in getting me to understand numbers. (To this day, my mind goes blank at the sight of an equation.)

Anyway, according to my childhood self, wearing a watch was like admitting you were old—like you had all these boring places you had to be at on a certain time, instead of getting to laze around in your PJs all day and catch the best cartoons. That, my friends, seemed to me the epitome of un-cool.

Now that I’m a grown-up myself—not quite an old lady, but definitely older—I cannot for the life of me explain this misconception. I’ll chalk it up to distaste via association (including a lifelong loathing for math). Because now, I see watches for what they truly are (and have always been): practical time-tellers, beautiful investments, and powerful, one-punch accessories.

I feel my penchant for accessorizing is behind all this newfound admiration. Browsing the fashion side of the World Wide Web on a daily basis has exposed me to every which way a girl can wear a watch—and, believe me, there are plenty. You can’t scan through the great style chronicles like Tommy Ton or The Sartorialist, much less any of the personal fashion blogs (my faves include Karla’s Closet and The Man Repeller), without setting eyes on a well-accessorized watch. And then there’s Pinterest.

If you’ve been lurking around the blogosphere for the past few years, you’ll know what I’m talking about—and if you haven’t, and don’t, here’s the summary. Fashionistas all over the planet are stacking bracelets upon bracelets over their favored timepieces to place them at the center of attention. Just check this out—see, the more, the merrier!

You can’t blame an abubut addict like me for wanting in on the game. You don’t even have to use a teeth-clenchingly expensive timepiece to pull this off—that is, unless you already own one (kudos!). All you’ll need is a watch—any watch—and a healthy crop of bracelets that will make it shine. From there, it’s a simple matter of piling everything on your wrist. Done.

For example, here’s how I would arrange three frugalista-chic watches with an armload of bracelets. Less is more? Not this time.
