In the past few years, I’ve found that the older I get, the less I care about my birthday.

Maybe I’ll set aside the whole day for some much-needed R&R. I’ll head out for a massage and a manicure, then treat myself to a new dress or those shoes I’ve been ogling for months. Heck, I might even consider switching my Blackberry off and reveling in the no-email serenity (even if, an hour later, when I’m reeling from Internet withdrawal, I will surreptitiously switch it back on).

But my days of planning elaborate parties, large sit-down dinners, or even casual group inumans are behind me. I would rather veg out with one or two of my closest friends, have a meal and a drink, and put my “birthday money” in the bank for future travels.

My ultimate goal is to simply not do any work if I can help it. Such a snooze, I know—but in a workaholic's life, this is the stuff of dreams!

Earlier this week, in fact, I successfully “celebrated” my birthday. By that I mean, I crammed all my deadlines and pulled all-nighters throughout the weekend so that I could have one day of peace. The trail I left behind me was bloody, tear-strewn, and littered with midnight snacks—and somewhere between Friday and Sunday, I think I might have suffered a mental breakdown (or two). In any case, I made it, more or less unscathed, to age 25. Hello, quarter-life crisis! (Just kidding.)

Whenever I turn a year older, it always inevitably gets me thinking about my last birthday and the year that lead up to it. What was I doing then? How was I dressing? What was I obsessed with? A lot of the time, it’s even more straightforward: what did I get for my last birthday?

Birthday presents are always a funny thing—people know either exactly what to get you or not at all. I’ve found it especially difficult to give gifts to "fashion people" because everybody’s taste differs. My parents, for instance, have long ceased to bestow me with actual presents in boxes and bows; instead, they finance my birthday shopping spree or boost my precious travel fund with loving donations (which are actually two of the best presents you could ever give a girl like me).

But sometimes, if you’re lucky, the people closest to you will present you with something so cool, you didn’t even know you wanted it until it’s gleaming in your hands. Those are the best kind—the gifts you don’t expect but instantly love. They don’t have to be the most expensive things in the world or the most difficult to find, and so on—but they are the most thoughtful, and they make your birthday much more special.

Today, I’m sharing five of the best gifts I’ve received in the past few years. And yes, you can be sure I never thought of “recycling” them, as we do with so many unwanted gifts (admit it!).
