1_closet-clean-out-questions.jpgWhen it comes to clothing, women have a tendency to be packrats. It's just the way we're rigged! Prom dresses, sale purchases, hand-me-downs—no item is too insignificant or easily parted with. But if your closet's ready to burst or if you've taken over your hubby's side of the wardrobe, it may be time to evaluate and trim down your collection. Ask yourself these eight questions while you sort through the pile.

1. HAVE I WORN IT IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS?
A quick way to weed out the haves from the have nots is by figuring out when you last wore the item in question. If it's nearly been a year since it has seen the light of day, you certainly won't miss it when you give it away.

2. CAN I FIT INTO IT?
And when we say fit, we're pertaining to the exact body you have now. Not after you go on that fad diet or after torturing yourself at the gym. No dress or skirt is worth punishing your body for.

3. IS IT A WARDROBE STAPLE?
Dark-rinse jeans, white tees, LBDs—if it's still in good condition, keep it. There are innumerable instances when you'll need one of these basics.

4. CAN I WEAR IT WITHOUT FEELING SELF-CONSCIOUS?
Remember that scandalously short skirt you impulsively bought because it looked so good in the dressing room? If just the idea of wearing it in public makes you cringe, no amount of debate with your inner voice will get you to muster up the confidence to debut it to strangers.

If it's your wedding dress or an heirloom accessory that's been with the family for years (think along the lines of a bag your lolo smuggled during the war for your lola), then by all means, treasure and store it. But if it's something completely useless that you can't part with just because, it's high time you face the facts that you don't need it.

6. IS IT FLATTERING ON MY FIGURE?
By now, you probably have an idea of what looks good and what doesn't on your frame. Again, we're talking about this body, not Giselle Bundchen's curves that you're determined to have. Be completely honest with yourself. If all else fails, ask the opinion of your mom or your sister. She'll tell it like it is.

7. CAN I SALVAGE IT?
Fashion DIYs are a fun way to kill time and unleash your creativity. Your retro elephant pants can be hacked into a pair of cutoff shorts, that ill-fitting blouse can be transformed into a crop top. The possibilities are endless, really. Of course, if you're just forcing the DIY issue, then it's probably best for you to leave the item as it is so you can give it away to someone who'll actually appreciate it.

8. WILL MY LIFE SEEM LESS WHOLE WITHOUT IT?
No? You know the drill, girl. Toss, donate, or sell.
