article_hair-damaging-habits.jpgWhen it comes to caring for our hair, some things are easier said than done. How often have you vowed to lessen the chemicals you put in your hair only to get a perm or an ombré 'do a few days after? Or how about that time you swore to give your straightening iron a rest only to come running right back to it?

If you really want to keep your tresses healthy and nourished, here are five bad hair habits you need to quit stat:

1. TYING YOUR HAIR TIGHTLY
We know all too well the satisfaction that comes with putting your hair up on a hot, sticky day. But tying your hair too tighly could lead to breakage and hair loss. As an alternative, opt for loose buns and braids—just as cute but gentler for your hair shafts.

2. HAVING A HEAVY HAND WHEN DETANGLING WET HAIR
Dealing with wet, tangled hair can be very frustrating, especially when you're in a hurry and just can't be bothered. Before you attack those locks with a brush, stop! Wet hair breaks easier than dry hair, so be extra gentle when removing dampness with a towel and always use a wide-toothed comb.

3. USING OLD BRUSHES AND COMBS
You regularly clean your makeup brushes and throw old makeup away, so the same should be done when it comes to your styling tools. Get rid of bacteria build-up in combs and brushes by removing hair every time you use it. Then, once a month, soak brushes and combs in a combination of water and baking soda to wash away all that gunk.

4. GETTING TOO ATTACHED TO HEAT STYLING TOOLS
We're sure you're well aware of the damage hair dryers and flat irons can do. Not only will those babies strip moisture off your hair, they're also responsible for roughness and color loss. If you just can't leave those implements alone, at least refrain from putting them to the highest setting and always apply a protecting product first.

5. WASHING YOUR HAIR IN HOT WATER
A hot shower after a long, tiring day is always ideal. But while the hot water may relieve sore limbs, it will only dehydrate your hair and strip them of their natural oils. When washing hair, think like Goldilocks and go for tepid water—not too hot, not too cold, but just right.
