Let’s face it: we’re not getting any younger. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t look it. As your looks start to change, your makeup techniques should be changing with it. So, we asked a couple of experts to spill their makeup tips so you can maintain that youthful glow at any age.
You find this tip in almost every beauty article and it’s really no joke. Moisturizing is the number one priority for skin care and anti-aging. Professional makeup artist, Tamara Pineda swears by it. “No matter what age and what skin type, I always tell women to have a good moisturizer! Not only does it help greatly with maintaining skin’s youthfulness, but it also makes your foundation glide on better. Skin looks younger when it is more hydrated.”
So slather on that moisturizer and add an extra dab over your cheekbones after foundation to get that inner glow.
Full coverage is optional
Anacleta Paredes, professional makeup artist and affiliate of MAC cosmetics, suggests that you skip the foundation all together, especially if you have good skin. Instead, “use the spot concealing technique. Only apply concealer that is the same shade as your overall skin shade to conceal specific areas.” This technique is more for an everyday, natural look.
But, if you’re the type that needs a little more coverage, Tamara also suggests to “find the right foundation for you. Applying a lighter shade of foundation can make you look ashy and may make you look more tired. Having the right shade will instantly give you a fresher look and even cut down on foundation since you won't have to blend so much.” She suggests going for a more luminous finish to reduce the appearance of fine lines.
Skip the contour and focus on adding volume to your face
Contouring might be what’s trending at the moment but it’s worth missing out on if you’re going for a more youthful look. As we get older, we lose volume in the face, so contouring may actually be making you look a lot older by hollowing out the face. Instead, focus on getting your glow on for a nice natural lift. “A good cream blush with reflective particles will give you that youthful glow from within,” says Anacleta. “Skin [also] looks much healthier when you’ve gotten a little sun. So go ahead and sweep on some bronzer on the high points of the face."
Brighten your eyes
Your eyes can make or break your whole look. “Using a corrector before your concealer helps greatly in eliminating stubborn eye discoloration,” says Tamara. Dark circles around your eyes are not only unflattering, they also make you look years older than you actually are. Tamara says, “go for a peach or bisque shade depending on your skin tone. Trust me, this is the quickest way to fake that beauty sleep you never had.”
After concealing those panda eyes, you can brighten your face even more by highlighting the inner corner of your eyes according to Anacleta. “Applying a shimmery champagne colored eyeliner on your waterline will give you a more wide awake look,” getting rid of the redness in the eyes that makes you look tired.
If dark circles aren’t a problem for you but you still want that fresh look, try working with mascara. As we age, our eyelids begin to droop and our lashes begin to thin out. “Curling your eyelashes will give your eyes an instant eyelift!” says Anacleta. “Swap your black mascara for a brown one to give you a softer, yet still defined look.”
