LOS ANGELES--It was a great day to be in Disneyland as we attended the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.Of course, the stars of the movie were there. Johnny Depp and his love interest in the movie, Penelope Cruz, hunky newcomer Sam Claflin, who plays the chaplain, the lovely mermaid-vampire Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Geoffrey Rush returning as Captain Barbossa, and the new villain, Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane.
Disney really went all-out as they rolled out the black carpet for all the guests that included some Pinoy celebs like Dancing with the Stars pro Cheryl Burke, Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical and Sucker Punch, and one of the mermaids in the movie, Daphne Joy.
We saw all kinds and shapes of Captain Jack Sparrow look-alikes, both male and female, walking down the black carpet that snaked all the way to a huge ship-stage where the open-air screening of the movie would be held. Popcorn, soda, and 3D glasses were all handed out to the guests after a sumptuous dinner buffet.
Before checking into the screening area, our daughter Ella and her boyfriend Adam decided to go on the Haunted Mansion ride. My hubby Ruben and I just chilled out with some free ice cream and hot, newly made churros.
When the movie started, there was some drizzle but the crowd wasn’t fazed at all. There were free comfy blankets for everyone to keep warm. After the movie, a fireworks display capped the night. Be sure to stay until the end of the credits for a surprise.
During our interview, Penelope told us that it was indeed very challenging to do the movie especially since she did it while she was pregnant. “I was feeling very well,” she said. “And they all knew. They were very protective. It was very important for me that they knew to be safe. I had to tell them as soon as I knew. They were very caring. It was funny to be dressed as a pirate, playing this tough character but being treated with such care by everybody.”She added that the most difficult scene she filmed was when she was on a deserted island with Johnny in Puerto Rico. “Those two days in that island in Puerto Rico were the most challenging for me because it was extremely hot,” she said. “And also because we had to do some helicopter shots. So there was nowhere to put a bathroom. You have to keep going in and out of the water every 15 to 20 minutes. So those days were interesting. But even then, we just laughed the whole time.”
Johnny, who had previously worked with Penelope in Blow, revealed how much he loved working with her again. “We rarely see each other but it’s as if we just wrapped Blow the other day when we see each other,” he said. “There’s a wonderful chemistry that just is there. What’s amazing about it is we do not need to push it. It just happens. It happens very naturally, very organically. She’s an amazing girl. And as far as friends go, once again, working together on this very long shoot and her situation during the shoot--we got very, very close. She’s someone I consider to be one of my best friends. She is incredibly loyal, incredibly loving and just a solid, solid friend, a wonderful woman--and a great mommy!”
