On October 10, 2017, The New Yorker published audio proof of Harvey Weinstein desperately trying to coax Italian-Pinay model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez into his hotel room the day after he sexually assaulted her.
In March 2015, Ambra claimed that Harvey “groped her breasts and reached up her skirt.” Immediately after the incident, she rushed to the New York Police Department Special Victims Division to file a report; she later agreed to wear a wire to “attempt to extract a confession or incriminating statement.”
[In this situation, a wire—also known as a bug—is a covert listening device that involves a microphone; it is commonly used in police investigations.]
Listen to their chilling exchange below:
Harvey: I’m telling you right now, get in here.
Ambra: What do we have to do here?
H: Nothing! I’m gonna take a shower, you sit there, and have a drink.
A: I don’t drink.
H: Then have a glass of water.
A: Can I stay [at] the bar?
H: No. You must come here now.
A: No, I don’t want to.
H: I’m not doing anything with you, I promise.
A: I know, I don’t want to.
H: Now you’re embarrassing me.
A: I’m sorry, I cannot.
H: No, come in here.
A: No, yesterday was kind of aggressive for me.
H: I know—
A: I need to know a person to be touched.
H: I won’t do a thing.
A: I don’t want to be touched.
H: I won’t do a thing, please. I swear, I won’t. Just sit with me. Don’t embarrass me in the hotel. I’m here all the time.
A: I know, but I don’t want to.
H: Sit with me, I promise—Please sit there. Please.
A: No, I can’t.
H: One minute, I ask you—Go to the bathroom.
A: Please, I don’t want to do something I don’t want to.
H: Go to the bath—Hey, come here. Listen to me.
A: I want to go downstairs.
H: I’m not gonna do anything. You’ll never see me again after this. Ok? That’s it. If you don’t—if you embarrass me in this hotel where I’m staying—
A: I’m not embarrassing you. It’s just that I don’t—I don’t feel comfortable.
H: Honey, don’t have a fight with me in the hallway.
A: It’s not nothing.
H: Please. I am not gonna do anything. I swear on my children. Please come in. On everything. I’m a famous guy.
A: I’m feeling very uncomfortable right now.
H: Please come in now. And one minute. And if you want to leave when the guy comes with my jacket, you can go.
A: Why yesterday you touch my breast?
H: Oh, please, I’m sorry, just come on in. I’m used to that. Come on.
A: You’re used to that?
H: Yes, come in.
A: No, but I’m not used to that.
H: I won’t do it again, come on, sit here. Sit here for a minute, please.
A: No, I don’t want to.
H: If you do this now, you will…Go. Bye. Never call me again. Ok? I’m sorry. Nice to—I promise you, I won’t do anything.
A: I know, but yesterday was too much for me.
H: The guy is coming. I will never do another thing to you. Five minutes. Don’t ruin your friendship with me for five minutes.
A: I know, but, it’s kind of like, it’s too much for me. I can’t.
H: Please, you’re making a big scene here, please.
A: No, but I wanna leave.
H: Ok, bye. Thank you.
The recording has been making rounds on the internet and is currently at the center of an ongoing investigation into several other sexual harassment and assault allegations against Harvey.
