Claudine Barretto’s camp has brushed off the P13,550 theft complaint that was filed against the actress by her former personal assistant Dessa Cadelario Patilan as “an unintelligently obvious attempt” to divert her attention away from the cases that she had filed against her estranged husband, Raymart Santiago.

According to Claudine’s lawyer. Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, the new complaint was suspicious as it was made four months after the actress had Dessa imprisoned for stealing P8.5 million worth of jewelry and valuables from her, especially when both alleged acts of thievery were supposed to have happened at the same time.

Topacio’s statement, which can be read on PEP.ph, also noted that the complaint was filed at a time when Claudine is not in good terms with both Raymart and her sister, Gretchen Barretto. He likewise pointed out that Gretchen and her partner Tonyboy Cojuanco are represented by the Siguion Reyna, Montecillo and Ongsiako law office, which is currently handling Dessa’s case for free.

“All of these things, when taken with our previous observations that former personal staff members of Ms. Barretto were colluding with Mr. Santiago after he had left the conjugal abode, in order to obtain certain valuable personal properties from the household and also information as to Ms. Barretto’s movements, make the merits of the case and the persons behind the filing thereof, very suspicious.”

However, Dessa’s own legal counsel, Atty. Alma Malongga, said that they did not file a case against Claudine to get back at her.

Sobrang pang-aapi, 'yun ang tingin ko (I think she was really maltreated.). And that is the reason why we filed,” the lawyer was quoted as saying in a separate article on PEP.ph. “I really felt there was basis to help this girl.”
