Bubbles_Paraiso_article.jpgAccording to this Pep.ph article, Bubbles Paraiso is happy to be a morena—the Spanish-derived term for a woman with dark skin. “I am a morena and I’ve always been one and I’m not going to change that,” declares the model-actress and sister of thespian Paolo Paraiso.

Bubbles’s appreciation for her tan complexion is nice to hear, especially in a country where white skin is touted as the ideal standard of beauty. The message that her morena-friendly mindset imparts is admirable: that whether your pelt is beach babe bronze or peaches’n’cream pale, you are beautiful just the way you are.

Bubbles tells Pep.ph about a trying time when her 9-year-old morena niece came home in tears because she wasn’t as fair as her mestiza schoolmates. “It broke my heart because she is really pretty and her skin is beautiful but because of that mentality, she cannot appreciate it,” says the model.

Did you grow up with the misleading mentality that dark-skinned girls aren’t as pretty as fair-skinned ones? Break it! Here are 5 reasons why it’s great to be a morena.

YOU HAVE A PERPETUAL SUMMER TAN

As a morena, you won’t have to wait for the hot months to tan your pelt—you’re just born with it! That means you can save on the self-tanning lotions and (often unnatural-looking) bronzers that sell like hotcakes when the ray-less rainy season sets in. It’s like living in an eternal summer—even when there’s no sun.

YOU LOOK YOUNGER, LONGER

Ever notice how dark-skinned women tend to look younger than their fair-skinned peers? Dark skin produces more melanin, a compound which provides protection against harmful UV rays—thus, the skin-aging effects of the sun manifest less in darker complexions than they do in lighter ones. Less skin damage, less wrinkles—and more time to stay forever 21!

YOU CAN CHEAT YOUR THIN-FACTOR

The deeper pigmentation of dark skin creates a play on light and shadow,
which allows you to cheat how slim your body appears. Think about how your face seems thinner after you’ve gotten a good tan at the beach—the same principle applies to the rest of your body when you’re a morena beauty.

YOU ARE A VISION IN BRIGHTS

Think that certain skin types can’t wear certain colors? Myth! It’s all about picking the right shade. Morenas, in particular, look amazing in brights—those vivid, va-va-voom tints that can take an outfit from so-so to striking. And you’re in luck—brights are back and bigger than ever, so you’ll be glowing in richly-hued garments that are completely on-trend.

YOU CAN FORGET TO SHAVE YOUR LEGS—AND NOBODY WILL NOTICE

Natural camouflage. Enough said.
