tessaWho says fashionistas can’t be sporty? Interior designer-writer Tessa Prieto-Valdes is as dedicated to fitness as she is to planning her next big outfit. She’s been finishing runs (from 5k to 30k) and half marathons since 2005. She even finished the world’s largest marathon, the ING New York Marathon, in 2008—while wearing a tutu!

Find out how Tessa prepares for her races by reading the tips below.

1. TRAIN WELL.

Undergoing training is essential for keeping fit, especially if you’re going to participate in a race. “Make sure you’re properly trained,” says Tessa. “Get a coach to check on the right way to bike, swim and run.”

2. GEAR IS AN INVESTMENT.

“Don’t skimp on the gear, especially the running shoes,” Tessa advises. Using subpar gear will only hurt you in the end—literally. Avoid getting injured in a race by getting the right gear.

3. PLAN AHEAD.

Participating in races isn’t an easy feat, so make sure you start your training early and keep it constant. “Don’t over- or under-train, and prepare months ahead for a race,” Tessa says. The key here is moderation.

4. START SMALL.

“Always have little goals or smaller races before the BIG race,” Tessa shares. “These will train you to pace, endure, and enjoy the biggest goal in the end.”

5. TRAIN WITH A FRIEND.

Training with a friend helps you gain experience. “Friends are great for training: Even if it’s an individual sport, it’s helpful to learn with a group,” says Tessa.

6. LEARN TO LOVE YOUR TRAINING.

If you don’t love what you’re doing, you’ll lose motivation easily. “Enjoy the training,” Tessa says. “When it gets tough or boring, just relax and change your workout venue.”

7. MOTIVATE YOURSELF.

Tessa has a great suggestion for self-encouragement for people who aspire to be fit: “Think about how wonderfully clothes will fit on you!”
