Writing your resume is a lot more than just a listing all your accomplishments. However, we imagine that for most HR managers, that’s exactly what your resume boils down to. After all, when you spend the whole day looking at application letter after application letter, resumes start to resemble each other. This is why it’s important that you get your resume right. Check out some useful tips below:
1. Get right to the point.
According to Business Insider, the top one-third of your resume should contain your qualifications and talents. Called a professional summary, it is composed of all relevant accomplishments for the job that you’re applying for.
2. Keep your resume simple.
Unless you’re Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, don’t go wild with your resume. Keep it neat, professional, and easy to understand, so you can let your accomplishments speak for themselves.
3. Stick to just one resume.
While some might praise you for dutifully creating different resumes for various job applications, most probably wouldn’t care. Don’t waste your time poring over what each employer might be looking for in a resume. Business Insider suggests that you focus on getting that one resume right instead.
4. Make sure your online resume matches your hard copy version.
With almost everything readily accessible over the Internet, Business Insider reminds you to cover all bases properly. Update your online resume as you see fit; match it with the resume you’re going to send all your prospective employers. Keep in mind that consistency is an admirable trait.
5. Ask someone to double-check your resume.
If you’ve been looking at your resume too many times, Forbes warns that you might miss out on a few glaring errors. It could be a typo or a grammatical issue; either way, it would definitely help if your friend spots it before your potential employer does.
