One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure—that’s the concept behind vintage clothing, second-hand books and furniture, and all manner of doodads and whatsits you might find in a thrift shop. “Thrift,” from the Old Norse thrÄ«fask, meaning to prosper or thrive, refers to the careful management of resources, especially when it comes to money. It’s an excellent word for what happens when you buy at thrift shops: you save money because, as long as you’re willing to browse and haggle, you’ll get quality items that have a good amount of use in them yet for just a fraction of the price you’d pay to buy them brand new. You’re also helping the environment—more reusing means both less waste and less manufacturing from raw materials.
But finding thrift shops you can trust to carry purchase-worthy materials at all times—whether you’re looking for clothes, accessories, antiques, books, old LPs, or even electronics—can be a daunting task.
