To give you tips on preserving your gown, we sat down with wedding gown preservation specialist Elizabeth de Lemos of Precious Memories. Before you head to the dry cleaner, consider Elizabeth's simple and important pointers on how to clean and store the dress closest to your heart.
SPOT THE DOTS
You're advised to be extra careful while wearing your gown, but with the whirlwind of emotions and events, you may forget to mind your dress. Elizabeth suggests checking your gown for stains and other damage right after the wedding. Since some stains are dry and colorless, you should have your wedding dress washed as soon as possible. Doing so will help your dry cleaner address the stains and damage with the right solution.
MADE IN HONOR
Make sure you know your wedding gown's material. Your dry cleaner should be informed of your gown's fabric so that s/he will know which treatments are appropriate. Take note of detail like delicate beading, and also inform your drycleaner of any torn parts to avoid further damage. Knowing these will reduce the risk of having a gown disaster!
PICK YOU UP, LAY YOU DOWN
When you get your wedding gown back from the dry cleaner, you now have to consider storing your gown. Whether it is made of heavy material or light, delicate fabric, it would be best to store the dress in a box. Elizabeth shares that you should avoid touching your gown once it has been cleaned and placed in a box--doing so exposes the dress to acidic hands or to a harsh environment that may lead to its yellowing or discoloration.
