Gauging by its unquestionable popularity in the tourism scene, the escalating tourist arrival statistics published in the papers, and the white sand beaches people look for in a dream destination, Puerto Galera could easily be mistaken as the capital of the province of Oriental Mindoro. Surprisingly, it is not. Mindoro was declared a province in the late 17th century. Before that, it was considered part of Batangas. Puerto Gallera—as it was previously known—served as its capital. But on November 15, 1950, through Republic Act 505, Mindoro was split into two separate provinces: Oriental Mindoro to the east, and Occidental Mindoro to the west. Puerto Galera became one of the 14 municipalities of Oriental Mindoro.
In spite of other charming nature attractions in Oriental Mindoro, Puerto Galera is like the bloodline of the province and the most appealing of all its municipalities, at least in terms of tourism. But don’t expect the town to be alive and active after six in the evening; most stores and shops are already closed by that time. The beachfront, however, comes to life at night, with its own brand of party and fun. And water recreation is definitely its primary asset.
