It's not unusual for guys to have a large appetite, but a new study featured on The Atlantic suggests that their supposed need to feed may be fueled by something more than just a basic biological impulse, at least, when they're dining with women.

While staking out an eat-all-you-can pizza place, researchers at Cornell University found that men ate 93 percent more pizza and 86 percent more salad when they were eating with the opposite sex than when they were just hanging out with guys because they want to—get this—show off how much they can literally stomach!

"Our observation of men 'eating heavily' is sensibly viewed in an evolutionary perspective as men 'showing off,'" the findings say.

On the flipside, women ate just as much regardless of whom they're eating with. The difference is that they feel like they're overeating when they're dining with men.
