With movies like Gravity and Interstellar, it’s easy to understand why more and more people are becoming interested in space science. But would that be enough to get you to join a permanent expedition to Mars? In the case of 36-year-old Sonia Nicole Van Meter, who says that space has always inspired her and who, incidentally, doesn’t like both films, it’s a no-brainer.

Van Meter is one of the 100 finalists chosen for the Mars One expedition, an amazing project that aims to establish a permanent human settlement on the red planet. From the 100, only two dozen will be trained for the mission, and Van Meter could end up being one of the lucky 24.

In an interview with Refinery29, the political consultant talks about the possibility of leaving her husband (yes, she’s happily married!). “My husband — walking away from a life with him would be excruciating. But, when we married, we promised each other that our marriage would serve to make us the best possible versions of ourselves. An opportunity that stands to benefit all of mankind [definitely qualifies] for that.”

While Van Meter says that the only things she plans on bringing to the expedition are her wedding rings, we think that these should make it in her luggage as well.
