A child’s needs go beyond food, education, and shelter. Dr. Honey Carandang, a renowned clinical psychologist, states that there are seven basic psychological needs for every child: personal significance, affection with unconditional acceptance and basic trust, clear and consistent limits, sense of competence, affiliation, wide scope of self-expression, and transcendence. 

In a recent Manila Bulletin article, Dr. Carandang affirms that parents and the school community play vital roles in boosting a child’s self-worth, “with the sense of being someone who matters, who is good at something, not merely a non-entity in society.”  It seems such a lofty responsibility, but it is nowhere near impossible.
